Where the woody family sits in perfumery

Among the great olfactive families, the woody family is the one that gives a fragrance its architecture. Where florals sing and citrus sparkles, woods hold a composition upright. They sit almost always in the base: dense, slow to evaporate, and responsible for the trail a perfume leaves hours after it was applied.

Perfumers rarely use a single wood. They build with several, because each brings a different texture — and it is texture, more than scent alone, that defines a woody signature.

Dry woods

Cedarwood and guaiacwood are the driest of the family: pencil shavings, warm sawdust, a thread of smoke. They lend clarity and structure without sweetness.

Creamy woods

Sandalwood, and its cousin amyris, behave almost like a balm. Milky, soft, faintly lactonic, they round the edges of a composition and bring it closer to the skin.

Resinous woods

Oud, cypriol, myrrh and olibanum belong to the darker end of the family. Resinous rather than simply woody, they carry incense, leather and a sense of ceremony.

The woody Eaux de Parfum of Memo Paris

  • Indian LeatherOudissime. Cypriol and oud framed by rose and jasmine absolute, over styrax, olibanum and a leather accord.
  • Palais BourbonVanilla versus amber. Black pepper, cardamom and incense above a balsamic heart, with sandalwood, patchouli, guaiacwood and vetiver beneath.
  • Sicilian LeatherZest and volcano. A citrus opening of cedrat and bergamot resolved by cedarwood Atlas, guaiacwood and patchouli.
  • MenorcaFlor de Sal. Bergamot and ginger over neroli and iris concrete, closing on sandalwood, salty musk and mineral notes.

How to wear a woody fragrance

Woods reward restraint. Applied to the pulse points and left alone, they develop slowly and stay close for a full day — which makes them well suited to cool weather, to evenings, and to anyone who prefers a fragrance noticed at conversational distance rather than across a room.
